§16. Since every piece of music should be performed according to its true content and its proper affect, composers do well in their works to use words at the beginning of a score, not only to indicate the tempo, but also to explain the content.

| So gut diese Vorsicht ist, so wenig würde sie hinlänglich seyn, das Verhudeln ihrer Stücke zu verhindern, wenn sie nicht auch zugleich die gewöhnlichen Zeichen, welche den Vortrag angehen, den Noten beyfügten. Wegen des ersten Puncts wird man mir leichte vergeben, wenn man bey den Probe-Stücken einige Wörter findet, welche eben so gar gewöhnlich nicht seyn mögen, ob sie schon zu meiner Absicht bequem gewesen sind.

As good a precaution as this is, it still will not suffice to prevent others from spoiling their pieces if composers fail to add the common symbols of performance as well. Regarding the first point, my readers may easily forgive certain words in the Probestücke that may be less common, although they suited my intention.

| Wegen der Zeichen habe ich bey denselben die nöthige Sorgfalt gleichfalls gebrauchet, weil ich gewiß weiß, daß sie bey unserm Instrumente eben so nöthig sind als bey andern. Wenn eine Stimme anders vorgetragen werden soll als die übrigen, so hat sie deswegen ihr besonderes Zeichen, ausserdem aber gehört ein solches Zeichen der ganzen Hand zu, sie mag eine oder mehrere Stimmen spielen.

Regarding the symbols, I have applied them with due care because I know with certainty that they are as necessary for our instrument as for others. A voice that needs to be performed in a manner different from the others has particular symbols of its own; otherwise they apply to the entire hand regardless if it is playing one or more voices.

| Die bloße Figur dieser Zeichen mag vielleicht bekannter seyn als die Wissenschaft, solche gleichsam zu beleben, und die abgezielte Würkung davon hervor zu bringen. Zu dem Ende wollen wir das Vornehmste deswegen in einigen Exempeln und Erklärungen beyfügen.

The mere shape of these symbols may be better known than the expertise needed to bring them to life, as it were, and to bring forth their intended effect. Therefore I want to add the most important points about this matter with some examples and explanations.
