§. 7. Da die letztere Art von Manieren von dem Geschmacke in der Musik besonders abhänget und folglich der Veränderung gar zu sehr unterworfen ist; da man sie bey den Clavier-Sachen mehrentheils angedeutet antrifft, und da man sie allenfalls bey der hinlänglichen Anzahl der übrigen missen kann: so werde ich nur etwas weniges am Ende, bey Gelegenheit der Fermaten davon anführen, im übrigen aber bloß mit denen aus der ersten Classe zu thun haben, indem sie mehrentheils schon von langen Zeiten her gleichsam zum Wesen des Clavier-Spielens gehört haben und ohne Zweifel allezeit Mode bleiben werden.

§7. I will treat the latter kinds of ornaments only briefly in connection with the fermatas at the end of this chapter, as they depend heavily on musical taste and are thus subject to much variation. Furthermore, they are spelled out in most keyboard pieces and, if necessary, we can do without them, provided the other ones are there in sufficient quantities. Meanwhile, I will deal here with those from the first class exclusively, as most of them have belonged, so to speak, to the essence of keyboard performance for a long time and will, without doubt, always remain fashionable.

Ich werde diesen bekannten Manieren einige neue beyfügen; ich werde sie erklären und ihnen so viel möglich ihren Sitz bestimmen; ich werde der Bequemlichkeit wegen ihre Finger-Setzung, in so weit sie merkwürdig ist, so wohl als die Art sie vorzutragen, gleich darbey mit anführen; ich werde durch Exempel das, was man nicht allezeit mit aller Gewißheit sagen kann, erläutern; ich werde von einigen falschen oder wenigstens undeutlichen Zeichen, damit man sie von den rechten unterscheiden lerne, ingleichen von verwerflichen Manieren das nöthige erwehnen; ich werde zuletzt meine Leser auf die Probe-Stücke verweisen, und hoffe durch alles dieses das hier und da eingewurzelte falsche Vorurtheil, von der Nothwendigkeit der überhäuften bunten Noten bey dem Clavier-Spielen, ziemlich aus dem Wege zu räumen.

I will add a few new ornaments to the established ones. I will explain them and determine their placement as far as possible; for the sake of convenience, I will indicate at the same time their fingering insofar as it is unusual, as well as their manner of execution. What cannot be verbalized unambiguously, I will elucidate by examples. I will mention what is necessary to know about objectionable ornaments and about some false or, at least, unclear symbols, so that one may learn to distinguish them from the correct ones. Finally, I will refer my readers to the Probe-Stücke, hoping more or less to eliminate, through all this, the false prejudice, which has taken root here and there, of a need for an overabundance of flamboyant notes in keyboard performance.
