Einleitung | Introduction |
*) Ich habe für nöthig gefunden... | *) I have deemed it necessary... |
Bach probably added this long footnote—which actually deals with a subject related to Part II of the Versuch rather than to part I—shortly before its publication in 1753. He referred to this footnote again in Versuch II:1, §72; Versuch II:29, §17; and Versuch II:36, §11. See also Versuch II:36, §8. Apparently Bach wished to defend the practice of omitting repeated left-hand notes in fast tempos, opposing Quantz’s suggestion to the contrary in the latter’s recently published essay on flute playing. Quantz requires the keyboard accompanist to play all repeated notes, as he writes in his Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen, XVII. Hauptstück, VI. Abschnitt, §32. |
