Chapter 2. On ornaments

§. 1. Die Vorschläge sind eine der nöthigsten Manieren. Sie verbessern so wohl die Melodie als auch die Harmonie.	§1. Appoggiaturas are one of the most necessary ornaments. They enhance both the melody and the harmony.
Im ersten Falle erregen sie eine Gefälligkeit, indem sie die Noten gut zusammen hängen; indem sie die Noten, welche wegen ihrer Länge oft verdrießlich fallen könnten, verkürzen, und zugleich auch das Gehör füllen, und indem sie zuweilen den vorhergehenden Ton wiederholen; man weiß aber aus der Erfahrung, daß überhaupt in der Musik das vernünftige Wiederholen gefällig macht.	In the first case, they bring out melodic delight by connecting the notes well, by shortening them (as their length might lead to dullness) while at the same time filling the ear, and by sometimes repeating the preceding tone, for we know from experience that reasonable repetitions can make pleasant effects in music.
Im andern Falle verändern sie die Harmonie, welche ohne diese Vorschläge zu simple würde gewesen seyn. Man kann alle Bindungen und Dissonantien auf diese Vorschläge zurück führen; was ist aber eine Harmonie ohne diese beyden Stücke?	In the second case, appoggiaturas change harmonies that would be too simple without them. All suspensions and dissonances can be derived from appoggiaturas, and what would harmony be without these two devices?
