§. 88. Wenn in den Probe-Stücken zwey Ziffern neben einander über eine Note vorkommen, so wird der eingesetzte Finger, welchen die erste Ziffer anweiset, nicht eher aufgehoben, als bis der andere da ist, weil diese mit zwey Ziffern bezeichnete Note nur einmal angeschlagen werden darf, es sey denn, daß eine darüber befindliche Manier, diese Note mehr als einmal zum Gehör bringet.	§88. If there are two numerals next to each other above one note [finger substitution] in the Probe-Stücke, the substituted finger (as indicated by the first numeral) is not lifted before the other one has arrived, because this note with two numerals must be struck only once, unless an ornament above makes it sound more than once.
Die Folge sowohl Tab. III. Fig. LX. [Ex. I:61] (a) als die Ausübung einiger Manieren machen dieses Einsetzen zweyer Finger hinter einander oft nöthig; dann und wann ist auch eine Aushaltung daran Schuld (b).	Subsequent notes as in Ex. I:61 (a), as well as the execution of some ornaments, often requires this substitution of one finger by another; now and then it is due to a sustained note (b).

Die Biegsamkeit des Daumens ist zu diesem Ablösen vorzüglich geschickt. Da dieses Hülfsmittel so gar leicht nicht ist, geschickt zu gebrauchen, so hat es von Rechtswegen nur bey einer wenigstens etwas langen Note und im Falle der Noth statt.	The flexibility of the thumb is particularly useful for substitution. As this technique is not very easy to apply, it has its rightful place only on a somewhat longer note, as required.
Diese Vorsicht merke man bey allen ausserordentlichen Hülfsmitteln, welche theils von Natur theils wegen ihrer Seltenheit schwer sind und auch bleiben. Man erlaube solche seinen Schülern nicht eher, als bis entweder gar keine andere Möglichkeit mehr da ist, oder man müßte eine noch größere Unbequemlichkeit sich gefallen lassen.	Observe this same precaution with all extraordinary techniques that are and remain difficult, partly due to their own nature, partly due to their scarcity. Do not allow your student to use them unless there is no other option, or if it would avoid even greater discomfort.
Aus dieser Ursache braucht Couperin, so gründlich derselbe sonsten ist, zu oft und ohne Noth dieses Ablösen eines schon eingesetzten Fingers. Ohne Zweifel war der rechte Gebrauch des Daumens damals noch nicht völlig bekannt; man siehet dieses aus einigen von ihm bezifferten Exempeln, allwo er besonders bey Bindungen so verfährt, anstatt den Daumen zu gebrauchen oder mit einem Finger fortzugehen, welches beydes leichter ist als dieses Hülfsmittel.	For this reason, Couperin, as reasonable as he is in other respects, uses this substitution of fingers too frequently and without necessity. Certainly the proper use of the thumb was not entirely known at that time, as we can see from some of his annotated examples, where, especially at suspensions, he suggests finger substitution, instead of using the thumb or proceeding with the same finger, both solutions being easier than this technique.
Da der Daumen von unsern Vorfahren nur selten gebraucht wurde, so war er ihnen oft im Wege; folglich hatten sie manchmal zu viel Finger. Als man nachhero solchen fleißiger zu gebrauchen anfing, so mengte sich die alte Art noch oft unter die neue und man hatte gleichsam noch nicht das Herz, den Daumen allezeit da, wo er hingehöret, einzusetzen. Jetzo empfinden wir dann und wann, ohngeachtet des bessern Gebrauchs der Finger bey unserer Art von Musik, daß wir deren zu wenig haben.	As our ancestors used the thumb only rarely, it frequently got in their way; thus they had sometimes too many fingers. When they later started to use it more frequently, the old and the new way often merged, and some were, so to speak, not brave enough to put the thumb always where it belongs. Nowadays we sometimes feel like we do not have enough fingers for our style of music, notwithstanding the improved use of them.
