| §. 18. Der heutige Geschmack hat einen ganz andern Gebrauch der Harmonie, als vordem, eingeführet. Unsre Melodien, Manieren und der Vortrag erfordern daher oft eine andere Harmonie, als die gewöhnliche. Diese Harmonie ist bald schwach, bald stark, folglich sind die Pflichten eines Begleiters heut zu Tage von einem weit größern Umfange, als ehemals, und die bekannten Regeln des Generalbasses wollen nicht mehr zureichen, und leiden auch oft eine Abänderung.

§18. Today’s taste has introduced a completely different use of harmony from previous times. Our melodies, mannerisms, and performance thus often require different harmony from the usual sort. This harmony is in one moment thin, the next moment full, such that the duties of an accompanist nowadays are of a much greater scope than before, and the normal rules of thoroughbass no longer suffice and must often be altered.
