Chapter 41. On the free fantasy

§. 8. Bey Fantasien, wo man Zeit genug hat, sich hören zu lassen, weichet man in andere Tonarten weitläuftiger aus. Hierzu werden nicht eben förmliche Schlußcadenzen allezeit erfordert; diese letztern finden am Ende, und allenfalls einmal in der Mitte Statt.	§8. In fantasies where one has enough time, one can modulate to more distant keys. Strong concluding cadences [förmliche Schlußcadenzen] are not always necessary; they occur at the end, and, if necessary, in the middle.
Es ist genug, wenn die große Septime derjenigen Tonart, (semitonium modi), worein man gehet, im Baße, oder in einer andern Stimme da ist. Dieses Intervall ist der Schlüssel zu allen natürlichen Ausweichungen, und das Kennzeichen davon. Wenn es in der Grundstimme lieget, so hat der Septimen- Sexten- und Sextquintenaccord darüber Statt (a):	It suffices if the leading tone (semitonium modi) of the key at hand occurs in the bass or in another voice. This note is the key to and hallmark of all natural modulations. If the leading tone is in the bass, then the 7, 6, or 6/5 chord may occur over it (a);




außerdem aber findet man es bey solchen Aufgaben, welche durch die Verkehrung jener Accorde entstehen (b).	in addition, the leading tone occurs in those figures that arise through the inversion of these chords (b).

Es ist bey dem Fantasiren eine Schönheit, wenn man sich stellet, durch eine förmliche Schlußcadenz in eine andere Tonart auszuweichen, und hernach eine andere Wendung nimmt. Diese, und andere vernünftige Betrügereyen machen eine Fantasie gut: allein sie müßen nicht immer vorkommen, damit das Natürliche nicht ganz und gar dabey versteckt werde.	It is particularly beautiful, if, in fantasizing, one prepares for a strong concluding cadence in another key but then takes another path. This and other judicious evasions make a fantasy good; but they must not occur too often, or the naturalness will be lost.
