§4. The harpsichord and the organ demand a certain caution in a fantasy—the former so that one does not play in a single color; the latter so that one is sure to play connected, while restraining oneself in chromatic passages. At the least, chromatic passages should probably not occur in abundance, since organs are seldom well-tempered.

| Das Clavicord und das Fortepiano sind zu unsrer Fantasie die bequemsten Instrumente. Beyde können und müssen rein gestimmt seyn. Das ungedämpfte Register des Fortepiano ist das angenehmste, und, wenn man die nöthige Behutsamkeit wegen des Nachklingens anzuwenden weiß, das reizendeste zum Fantasiren.

The clavichord and the fortepiano are the most advantageous instruments for fantasies. Both can and must be tuned purely [rein gestimmt seyn]. The undamped register of the fortepiano is the best, and, if one possesses the necessary caution regarding the reverberation, the most charming for fantasizing.
