| §. 3. Die Baßthemata werden entweder von den übrigen Instrumenten im Einklange begleitet, oder blos von den Bäßen allein ausgeführet. In jenem Falle läßt der Accompagnist die Harmonie weg, und spielet seine vorgeschriebenen Noten ebenfalls in Octaven mit beyden Händen: wenn aber der Componist aus guten Ursachen Ziffern über den Baß gesetzet hat, weil die Bindungen, welche dabey angebracht werden können, gerne gehöret seyn wollen, und das Thema nicht allein nicht verdunkeln, sondern vielmehr erklären, so muß man sie mitspielen.

§3. Bass themes are either accompanied by the other instruments in unison, or merely performed by the basses alone. In the first case the accompanist omits the harmony and plays his indicated bass notes in octaves with both hands. If the composer, however, has placed figures over the bass with good reason, because the suspensions that can be introduced want to be heard, and in doing so the theme would not only not be obscured, but rather would be clarified, then one must play them.

| Gewiße Themata sind so beschaffen, daß ein verständiger Zuhörer nur ein halbes Vergnügen spühret, wenn die Harmonie dazu fehlet, weil diese letztere in der Vorstellung seiner Seele von den Tönen, die er höret, untrennbar ist. Die Orgel ist alsdenn, sowohl wegen der Bindungen, als auch wegen der durchdringenden Stärke zur Begleitung das vorzüglichste Instrument. Im zweyten Falle, welcher bey zweystimmigen Sing- und Spielsachen vorkommt, ist eine harmonische Begleitung nöthig.

Certain themes are structured such that an educated listener only receives half the pleasure if the harmony is lacking, because the latter is, in his soul’s imagination, indivisible from the tones he hears. The organ is the most advantageous instrument for accompaniment, not only because of the suspensions, but also because of its penetrating dynamic. In the second case mentioned above, which occurs in two-voice vocal and instrumental pieces, a harmonic accompaniment is necessary.
