§2. In creating a bass theme, certain composers can fall short of this goal in one of two ways: in some cases, they wish to write out their good melody all at once, yet at an inopportune moment [for addressing the special requirements of a bass theme]; so they write down a good melody that is bare and without foundational notes, and to which a good bass may be added [later].

| Einem verständigen Accompagnisten würde es alsdenn bey der Begleitung gar leicht seyn, anstatt einen besondern Gesang zu diesem Thema zu erfinden, dieses Thema in der rechten Hand zu nehmen, und mit der linken aus dem Stegreife eine Grundstimme dazu, mit der gehörigen Harmonie zu machen.

Instead of inventing a separate melody for this theme, a good accompanist would find it quite easy to take this theme in the right hand and to make a foundational voice at sight with the proper harmony.

| Im andern Falle pflegen die Baßthemata gar zu trocken zu seyn, indem der Componist, um den jetzt gedachten Fehler zu vermeiden, und sich zur Ausarbeitung der Hauptstimme alle mögliche Bequemlichkeit zu verschaffen, einen guten, ehrlichen und simpeln Baß hinschreibt, der weiter nichts ausdrücket. Diese letztern Themata haben jedoch noch dieses gute, daß sie ein geschicktes Accompagnement zulassen, indem bey jenen oft gar keine Harmonie darauf ist.

In the second case, the bass themes tend to be too dry, since the composer, in order to avoid the already mentioned-errors, and to make the working out of the principal voice as convenient as possible, writes down a good, honest, and simple bass that expresses nothing extra [that would give the bass the melodic character of a true theme]. Such latter themes nevertheless have the advantage that they allow a skillful accompaniment, in that they often lack harmony.
