Chapter 36. On passing tones

§. 3. Die durchgehenden Noten kommen im Gange, und im Sprunge vor, und sind mehrentheils etwas geschwinde. Wenn sie einzeln vorkommen, so findet man sie nicht angedeutet. Von den gehenden und springenden Noten bey (a) gehet die zweyte durch.	§3. Passing tones occur by step and by leap, and are usually somewhat fast. Individual passing tones are not indicated. Of the stepwise and leaping notes at (a), the second note [of each eighth-note pair] is the passing tone.



Man kann hierbey zur Regel annehmen, daß auf jene kein Sprung folgen darf, und bey diesen die Octave der durchgehenden Note schon vorher in der rechten Hand liegen muß. Folglich haben die Noten bey (b), wo diese zween Umstände fehlen, allerseits ihre eigene Begleitung.	Here one can make the rule that stepwise passing tones must not be followed by a leap, and that the octave above the leaping passing tone must already be present in the right hand. Thus it follows that the notes at (b) that do not satisfy these two conditions always require their own accompaniment [i.e.,they are not passing tones].

Wenn die Grundstimme, anstatt in die Untersecunde zu steigen (c), in die Septime herauf springt (d): so kann diese letztere ebenfalls durchgehen, ohne daß die Octave davon schon gelegen hat. Ein Sprung in die Octave wird hier nicht als ein Sprung, sondern als eine wiederholte Note angesehen.	If the bass voice, rather than descending by second (c), instead leaps up a seventh (d), then the latter may also pass through without the octave already being present. An octave leap is not considered a leap, but a repeated tone.


Wenn mehr als eine durchgehende Note hintereinander vorkommt, so ist die Andeutung durch unsern Queerstrich eben so nothwendig, als wenn langsame Noten durchgehen sollen (e).	When more than one passing tone occurs consecutively, then the indication via a horizontal dash is just as necessary as when slow notes occur as passing tones (e).
