§4. It is often necessary, and not at all improper, for the accompanist to speak with the soloist before the performance of a piece and to allow the soloist total freedom in how the accompaniment is arranged.

Some soloists wish to restrict the accompanist, while others do not. The safest procedure is to speak together beforehand, since opinions differ, and the soloist is in charge.
