One sustains those intervals that were already present in the previous chord and which can remain held in the following chord. Through this manner of performance the accompaniment has a singing effect, especially if it involves flowing progressions in the best position of the right hand.

It is indispensable in legato tones. For these good reasons, most of the examples in this book are arranged in this manner of performance, so that the learners will become accustomed to it, and at the same time will be deterred from that choppy manner of thoroughbass realization, which is as common as it is ugly.

If the tempo is so slow, and the instrument that one plays is so weak that the held tones do not sustain sufficiently, then it is necessary to re-strike the chord. This is not necessary on the organ.
