Wenn die Hauptstimme eine lange Aushaltung hat, welche nach den Regeln des guten Vortrages mit einem Pianißimo anfängt, bis auf ein Fortißimo allmählich anwächst, und wieder nach und nach bis auf ein Pianißimo abnimmt: so richtet sich der Begleiter hiernach auf das genaueste. Er wendet alle Künste, das Forte und Piano herauszubringen, so viel ihm möglich ist, an. Er wächst und fällt zugleich mit; nicht mehr, nicht weniger.

§13. If the principal voice sustains a long tone, which, according to the rules of good performance, begins with a pianissimo, gradually swells to a fortissimo, and again little by little diminishes to a pianissimo, then the accompanist follows this as closely as possible. He applies all means available to him to produce forte and piano. His crescendo and diminuendo occur at the same time [as those of the soloist]—no more, no less.
