Weil diese Octaven-Sprünge, besonders in der linken Hand, allwo sie am öftersten vorzukommen pflegen, das Fortsetzen mit dem Daumen oder dem kleinen Finger nothwendig machen, so thun diejenigen, welche durch die Verdoppelung der Octaven im General-Basse noch nicht hinlänglich hierinnen geübt sind, wohl, wenn sie den ersten besten Baß ergreifen, und solchen einmal mit dem bloßen Daumen und das andremal mit dem kleinen Finger alleine durchspielen; dadurch kriegen sie ohnvermerkt eine Fertigkeit nicht allein in diesem nöthigen Fortsetzen, sondern auch das Grifbret auswendig zu finden.

§74. Since octave leaps (especially in the left hand, where they occur most frequently) require repeated use of the thumb and fifth finger, those who are not yet well-trained in doing so through octave doublings in thoroughbass would do well to take any bass part and play it through once with only the thumb and then with only the fifth finger. Thus they will subconsciously acquire the facility not only to repeat their fingers in the required manner but also to play without looking at the keyboard.
