§8. An accompanist must be acutely aware whether the voice or instrument of the person he accompanies is consistently loud in the high and low registers, and whether the tones of the principal voice sound equally clear at a distance or in close proximity.

| Ist dieses letztere nicht, so muß man die Begleitung, auch ohne ausdrückliche Andeutung, so einrichten, damit die schwachen Töne durch ein zu starkes Accompagnement nicht bedecket werden. Man weiß z. E. von der Flöte, daß sie in der Höhe weit durchsticht, in der Tiefe aber nicht, ohngeachtet sie übrigens von gleichem Tone seyn kann.

If this is not the case, then one must arrange the accompaniment such that the softer tones are not covered by an accompaniment that is too loud—even if this is not expressly indicated. For instance, one knows that a flute penetrates clearly in the high register, but not in the low register, even though the rest are fairly uniform.
