Chapter 29. On performance

§. 21. Bey dem Schlußtriller eines Stückes wird mehrentheils angehalten, das Tempo sey wie es wolle. Hat das Stück Reprisen, so wird dieser Triller, und folglich auch die Grundnote dazu, erst bey der letzten Wiederholung am Ende, verlängert. Hierdurch giebt man dem Schlusse des Stückes noch zuletzt ein Gewichte, und läßt den Zuhörer empfinden daß es aus sey.	§21. The closing trill in a piece is usually extended, whatever the tempo. If the piece has repeats, then this trill (and hence its bass note) is only extended at the end upon the last repetition. In doing so one gives the end of the piece a certain weight, and lets the listener know that it is over.
Diese Art zu schließen kann vielleicht, ohngeachtet ihrer guten Ausnahme, in einigen Gegenden nicht eingeführt seyn. Der Begleiter muß also in diesem Falle viele Aufmerksamkeit anwenden, zumal da auch bey uns zuweilen Schlußtriller vorkommen, wo entweder das Feurige oder das Traurige eines Gedanken erfordert, daß man in dem Tempo gerade fortgehe (a).	This manner of closing can, ~~except for the sake of variety~~ despite its good effect, perhaps [mk] not be used in ~~many~~ some [mk] situations. In this case the accompanist must be very attentive, especially since closing trills occasionally occur in the accompaniment part, wherever either the passion or the sadness of any idea require that one continue in tempo (a).



Es verstehet sich von selbst, daß der Accompagnist ebenfalls nicht anhält, wenn die Grundnoten bey dem Schlußtriller fortgehen (b).	It is obvious that an accompanist also does not stop if the bass notes at the closing trill continue (b).

Wenn aber bey diesem Fortgange der Grundstimme die letzte Note die Quinte der Tonart ist, so hält man dabey noch so lange stille, bis man merket, daß die Hauptstimme, oder die übrigen Mitmusicirenden mit ihrem Triller fertig sind (c).	If, however, in the continuation of the bass, the last note is scale degree five, then one remains still until one notices that the principal voice or the remaining musicians are finished with their trill (c).

Eben so verfährt man, wenn in der Grundstimme, nach dem Eintritt des Trillers blos die Quinte der Tonart in der höhern oder tiefern Octave wiederholet wird (d).	One also proceeds in this way if the bass note is merely repeated an octave above or below after the entrance of the trill (d).

Wenn sich ein Stück ohne Schlußtriller endiget, so gehet man auch, ohne anzuhalten, gleich weiter fort (e).	If a piece concludes without a closing trill, then one also continues without stopping (e).
