| §. 6. Das Generalbaßstudium könnte viel leichter und angenehmer gemacht werden, wenn man wegen der Art zu beziffern überall einig würde. Hierzu müßten gute Clavierspieler, welche selbst gut accompagniren können, das meiste beytragen. Man trift große Componisten und Musiker an, die sich ein gutes Accompagnement sehr wohl gefallen lassen, denen es aber vielleicht schwer fallen sollte, alles so, wie es auf dem Claviere sich ausnimmt, und wie es folglich seyn muß, anzudeuten. Unter die vornehmsten Puncte, worüber man überein kommen müßte, würden wohl folgende gehören: Man muß alles nöthige genau anzeigen; man muß weder zu viel noch zu wenig Ziffern über die Noten setzen; man muß solche Ziffern wählen, welche dem Vortrage gemäß sind; man muß diese Ziffern an ihren rechten Ort setzen; man muß Zeichen der Andeutung machen, wenn man keine hat; man muß alle Arten von Accompagnement, besonders das drey- zwey- und einstimmige, da, wo es seyn soll, andeuten u. s. w.

§6. The study of thoroughbass could be made much easier and more convenient if one were to standardize the manner of figuring. Good keyboardists who themselves can accompany well must contribute the most in this regard. There are many great composers and musicians who, although they are certainly appreciative of a good accompaniment, may find it difficult to indicate everything in a manner most advantageous for the keyboard, as is necessary. Among the most important points that must be standardized are: one must indicate everything that is necessary; one must set neither too many nor too few figures over the bass notes; one must choose figures that are appropriate to the performance; one must place such figures in the proper location; one must indicate with some sign when no figures are present; one must indicate all types of accompaniment where they should occur, especially three-, two-, and one-voice accompaniment, etc.
