Section 1. On ornaments in general

§. 1. Es hat wohl niemand an der Nothwendigkeit der Manieren gezweifelt. Man kann es daher merken, weil man sie überall in reichlicher Menge antrifft.

§1. Presumably nobody questions the need for ornaments, as can be seen from their abundance everywhere.

Indessen sind sie allerdings unentbehrlich, wenn man ihren Nutzen betrachtet. Sie hängen die Noten zusammen; sie beleben sie; sie geben ihnen, wenn es nöthig ist, einen besondern Nachdruck und Gewicht; sie machen sie gefällig, und erwecken folglich eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit; sie helfen ihren Inhalt erklären; es mag dieser traurig oder frölich oder sonst beschaffen seyn wie er will, so tragen sie allezeit das ihrige darzu bey; sie geben einen ansehnlichen Theil der Gelegenheit und Materie zum wahren Vortrage; einer mäßigen Composition kann durch sie aufgeholfen werden, da hingegen der beste Gesang ohne sie leer und einfältig, und der kläreste Inhalt davon allezeit undeutlich erscheinen muß.

Indeed, they are indispensable considering their benefits: they connect the notes, animate them, lend special emphasis and weight to them if needed, they make them pleasing, and thus excite special attention. Ornaments help to explain the musical content; they make their own contribution, whether the content is sad, happy, or otherwise as the case may be. They lend plenty of opportunities and material to the true art of performance. They can improve a mediocre composition, while even the best melody would seem empty and simplistic without them, and the clearest content would always appear indistinct.
