Man ist nicht mehr zufrieden, einen Accompagnisten zu haben, der als ein wahrer musicalischer Pedant weiter nichts als Ziffern gesehen und gespielet hat; der die dazu gehörigen Regeln auswendig weiß und sie bloß mechanisch ausübt. Man verlangt etwas mehreres.

§10. Thus we see that we are worse off nowadays than previously because of thoroughbass players. Nothing other than the subtleties of today’s music are to blame. One is no longer satisfied to have an accompanist who, like a true musical pedant, does nothing other than see and play the figures—one who knows the attendant rules by memory and merely applies them mechanically. One requires something more.
