Die reine Quarte dissonirt zwar bey unserer Aufgabe am wenigsten, demohngeachtet aber muß sie dennoch aufgelöset werden, wenn sie nicht im Durchgange vorkommt. | The perfect fourth in this context is the least dissonant, but nevertheless must be resolved, unless it occurs as a passing tone. |
In modern usage, a passing tone must be approached and left by step in the same direction. As shown in Ex. II:101, though, Bach uses the term more freely to refer to tones approached and left by step in opposite directions (i.e., neighbor tones), as well as arpeggios. |
