In the 1762 edition of the Versuch, the crosses indicating bad voice leading in the tenor in mm. 5–6 are placed ambiguously in the middle of the staff. The 1797 edition uses two large crosses that could be mistaken to suggest cross-relations between tenor and bass voices, which is not Bach’s intended meaning. The doublings Bach mentions in the text are those in measures 1–4. |
