Findet sich bey einem Solo die Hauptstimme über dem Basse, oder alle Stimmen bey mehrstimmigen Stücken drüber in Partitur: so kann der Accompagnist allenfalls ohne Ziffern zu rechte kommen; nur muß er in der Composition hinlänglich geübt seyn. Ist aber überdem noch eine genaue Bezifferung über dem Basse, so kann das Accompagnement gut seyn. Ich verstehe hier unter dem guten Accompagnement den vollkommensten Grad. Außerdem weiß ich wohl, daß einem Clavierspieler sehr oft unbezifferte Bässe vorgelegt werden, und daß er sich nicht allezeit alsdenn von dem Accompagnement losmachen kann.

§2. If the principal voice is present over the bass, or if all voices in many-voiced works are present over the bass in the score, then the accompanist can manage without figures, if necessary; but he needs to have practiced the composition sufficiently. But if, moreover, the bassline is also figured adequately, then the accompaniment can be good. By good accompaniment I mean the very best. Moreover, I know all too well that the keyboardist is very often given an unfigured bass, and in such cases he is obliged to do what he can with it.
